The French philosopher Montaigne said that "children's playings...should be deemed their most serious actions." As parents and owners of the Toy Shop of Concord, we take to heart the value of play — not only how toys are played with, but how they are made, why we want to sell them, why they are bought.

Our customers and those who work with us — our employees and our manufacturers and distributors in the U.S. and abroad—know that we're proud to be caretakers of a on-of-a-kind New England institution that has been passed on to us from two previous owners who were committed as we are to preserving traditions about toys and play.

The tradition of caring and thoughtful decision-making by parents: Is it well made? Is it age-appropiate for children? Does it stimulate their thinking or imagination? Will it encourage positive play behavior? We ask these questions when we research and purchase toys because we know our customers will ask them.

The tradition of a nurturing shopping experience: The Toy Shop is inviting, stimulating, colorful, lively, friendly, old fashioned, homey. Our staff is knowledgeable about our products. Our youngest customers sit on the floor to play with the toys, to try them out. Parents stroll, talk with our staff, get their questions answered. Click to view our first Christmas card.

For over 62 years, The Toy Shop has been known and respected for a philosophy its owners have lovingly perpetuated — that toys are serious business when it comes to the value of play.
